Workplace Noise

Noise induced hearing loss has been identified as one of the major occupational diseases affecting New Zealand workers.

The Department of Labour has published an approved Code of Practice for the control of noise that requires employers to undertake noise hazard identification and regular employee exposure assessments.

For example, if you have:

  • moved premises
  • relocated significant machinery within your current premises, or
  • changed from 8 to 12 hour shifts

you must have noise levels reassessed.

Compliance with the Approved Code of Practice for the Management of Noise in the Workplace 1998 may be considered as compliance with the noise controls required by Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992.
