Asbestos Removal

Asbestos removal in a safe manner is crucial to the continued health of your team. Asbestos can be found in many New Zealand workplaces. Do you have any in yours?

What is Asbestos? Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous silicate mineral that has historically been used extensively in industrial and building products.

Safe asbestos removal and testing is crucial. Unfortunately asbestos, when inhaled as respirable fibres over a period of time, can result in asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma (cancer of the lung lining).

Asbestos is commonly either Chrysotile (white), Amosite (brown) or Crocidolite (blue).

It can be found in common building products such as:

  • Flat and corrugated cement sheeting
  • Moulded cement products (spouting, down pipes, flues etc)
  • old pipes
  • Vinyl floor tiles
  • Sheet vinyl backing

Do you have any of the above in your workplace?

It also has many industrial uses including:

  • Pipe and vessel insulation
  • Gaskets

The management of asbestos in the workplace is controlled by the Asbestos (Health and Safety in Employment) Regulations 1998 with guidance being given in the Department of Labour’s publication “Guidelines for the Management and Removal of Asbestos”.
