Drug and Alcohol Testing

Drug & Alcohol Testing

The Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 places a duty of care on a PCBU (person conducting a business or undertaking) to provide a
safe workplace.

The Act specifically states that the term “hazard” includes a situation where a person’s behaviour may be a source of harm, such as situations resulting from drugs or alcohol.

A person under the influence of unlawful drugs or alcohol at work may be a hazard in the context of the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 and accordingly a drug/alcohol testing policy may be an appropriate hazard-management step. The standard that controls the procedures for specimen collection and the detection and quantity of drugs of abuse in urine is the AS/NZS 4308:2008. For more information about how TriEx Wellbeing can help you with your drug and alcohol policy, please download our flyer here.

Types of drug/alcohol testing:

  • Pre-employment testing
  • Post incident testing
  • Reasonable cause testing
  • Random testing
  • Monitoring

Employers who wish to implement any type of drug testing regime should ensure appropriate policies and/or changes in employment agreements are made to notify employees that drug testing may occur.  Once policy is created and implemented, drug testing should clearly be for a health and safety purpose, on reasonable notice, and should occur with due regard to the employee’s rights.

Can TriEx undertake drug testing outside normal business hours?

TriEx business hours are 8.30am to 5pm Monday to Friday and appointments can be made at our office during this time.

For further information please email enquiries@triex.co.nz or phone 0800 487 439.

Testing for Synthetic Cannabis

Synthetic Cannabis is a hot topic right now, with 8 deaths linked to synthetic cannabis just in July 2017. Synthetic cannabinoids are smokable products that are plant based and sprayed or dried with a variety of chemicals. These act in a similar way to cannabinoids that are naturally found in cannabis such as delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). These products were originally created as a legal alternative to cannabis, but have now been banned since 2014.

Synthetic cannabis acts on the same brain cell receptors as natural cannabis however, it is more likely to cause hallucinations and heart problems. A drug counsellor has said recently that the effects of synthetic cannabis can be worse than meth, with users being kept awake for days. On top of this the use of synthetic cannabis has also been linked to Psychosis, Renal failure, and Heart failure, with very high rates of seizures among users (18%).

The effects of synthetic cannabinoids can be unpredictable and life threatening. To ensure the safety of your team and work sites, and to assist with managing the risks or impairment, TriEx offer testing for synthetic cannabinoids as an option within your drug testing programme including at Pre-Employment.

What our clients think of our mobile health unit:

“We have recently had all our staff undertake annual medicals with TriEx and this year we had the opportunity to have these conducted in TriEx’s mobile medical van. This made the co-ordination of medicals on each site extremely easy, it saved a lot of down time as our staff did not have to travel to their appointment. We are looking forward to using this excellent facility again next year.” Alena Taylor – Fulton Hogan Civil South

Pre-Employment Assessments

Pre-employment medical testing helps you assess the suitability of the person for the job and helps you meet your legal obligations.

Pre-employment medical testing helps minimise your recruitment and training costs because you pre determine the suitability of a candidate. This also reduces lost time on the job due to accidents and injuries that are prevented. Many of our clients find the pre employment screening service invaluable, the small investment paying off many times over.

Our medical assessments can help you:

  • Assess potential employees suitability for your role
  • Record baseline health status for newly appointed employees so pre-existing medical conditions are identified and not attributed to your workplace
  • Check candidates for drug & alcohol use
  • Record health status for an exiting employee, protecting you from future liability.

What’s involved?

Potential, current or exiting employees undergo a variety of testing procedures at our premises usually within 1 – 2 days of your request.

Pre-Employment Assessments can include any or all of the following:

Biological Testing

We can sample for exposure to Chemicals, Cholinesterase and Lead Exposure, with either Urine sampling or Blood sampling. Sampling for chemicals can be done by either blood or urine sampling, but blood sampling is the most effective method for Cholinesterase and Lead exposure.

Blood Pressure Health Assessments
